MP-72's on S.I.R.T.

Postby newkirk » Sun Aug 27, 2017 2:40 pm

Anyone know about this unique assignment on S.I.R.T ?
I was told this came about because of a strike at St. Louis Car Co. resulting in late delivery of MUE-2's (R-44's)
and rapid failure of 1925 Standard Steel MUE-1's
How many cars were assigned ? Who operated them, SIRT or LIRR ? Did any cars have lavatories ? How long were they out there ?
Anything else you could add would be appreciated.

According to the 1968-1973 MTA 5-Year Report (page 52), five 1955 LIRR cars (MP72s) were leased to SIRT in 1972, one returned in early 1973 when first R44s were delivered and the remaining four following in mid 1973 when all R44s were accepted for service.
Since my friend continues to chain smoke nonstop, she is probably an Alco.

LOVE these pictures. The first and third picture were taken at the Tottenville Station. I love righty there and not much has changed. A little bit more cleaner than in the third picture but it looks the same today.

How did these cars get from Long Island to Staten Island and return?

Car float across the harbor from Brooklyn to NJ and then over the bridge to SI?

A longer all rail route via Penn Station, thru NJ and then over the bridge to SI?

Car floated from Brooklyn to Staten Island.

That's when the old B&O car float bridge was still working.
