M-3 Car End Doors

Postby Head-end View » Wed Jul 26, 2017 8:31 pm

I happened to ride the same set of M-3's twice today on a round-trip to NYC. And I was surprised to note that the storm door windows on the head cars, #9823 and 9800 seem to have been replaced with new glass that looks reasonably clear, though a little distorted. I had noticed in recent years that some of those M-3 front windows were so fogged up that you almost couldn't see out of them. Is the LIRR replacing all of those windows or did I just happen to find two cars on the same train that had the glass replaced due to breakage or being too opaque to see out of anymore?

And BTW, those great M-3 horns still sound as good as ever at full-blast, unlike the M-7's crappy, muffled horns.

They're not being replaced, just luck.

Yeah I kind of thought that. Must have just been a lucky coincidence to get two head-end cars on the same train with replaced windows. I'm sure LIRR isn't spending one dollar more than they need to keeping these cars in-service until the M-9's arrive.
