What's being scrapped?

Postby Amtrak7 » Sat Feb 18, 2017 12:29 am

Included in this month's MTA Board agenda is a rider contract for LIRR on top of MNR's contract with Frontier to scrap equipment.

The equipment specified is: 22 long term OOS M3's, 2 M1's, a gondola, some flatcars, and some locomotives.

Does anyone know what locomotives and M1's are in line for the scrapper?

The M-1s are likely 9401 and 9591 - sandite cars.

Locomotives (I suspect) could include the SW1001s returned from NYA to LIRR. They look really poor.

The M1s are likely 9745-46, which were moved from the Bone Yard in Morris Park to the former Arch Street Team Yard over the fall. There are also 20 M3 cars parked in the newer Arch Street facility. 9 Married pairs and two separated cars.

9745-46 are part of the New York Transit Museum (NYTM) fleet, unless NYTM no longer has interest in them.

Everyone:

Does anyone have a car number list of the group of 22 retired M3 cars that is to be sold off?

It would not surprise me if the two M1 sandite cars were replaced - I recall either reading or being
told that the LIRR would seek to convert at least two odd-number retired M3 cars into sandite cars
(equipped with lavatories) primarily due to spare parts availability.

It seems that M1 pair 9745-9746 continues to remain in a state of limbo depending on what the
MTA Transit Museum decides to do with these cars. If they decide not to retain them for future
display would any other rail or transit museum be interested in preserving them?

For "safe keeping" have NYTM "loan" that M-1 pair to Danbury Rail Museum for now?
Until NYTM has a Building to display them!

Actually NYA 105 & 106 were returned to the LIRR in full working condition. They have 100 102 & 104 out of service with major engine failures. They are not scheduled to be overhauled. They might be the first to go, along with the 3 dead MP15s in Port Jeff.

Are those SWs & MPs really so far gone that they are of no resale value? Isn't the market for those cab enders pretty good these days?

If the SW1001s 100, 102,104, 105 and 106(both leased to NYA) are not scheduled to be overhauled, then what is the LIRR going to get in replacement for the five SW1001s and the three dead MP15s in Port Jeff and how are they going to get the funding?

Funding for new work locomotives has been secured by reallocating funding from the 2010-2014 Capital Program that was originally planned for the now canceled alternative diesel fleet. The LIRR and STV determined that a fleet of remanufactured work locomotives would be the best option for the replacement of the current fleet of E15s and E10s.

M3's waiting for their demise are:

Sounds like the junk at Arch street. Will they be scrapped on site? Probably plenty of space to do it if they drag them into the former freight tracks.

There should be another scrap contract for the bogies coming this year that are stored on the montauk cutoff.

My guess is not cut up on site, but hauled away. The railroad wants noting to do with the asbestos, as minimal as it is.

Speaking of other equipment, I wonder if the old power unit (3100) will go, it does nothing but get moved from one spot in RH/MP to another.
