http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/Freight%20after%201966/Freight%20After%201966.htm ROOFWALKS/RUNNING BOARDS DETAILS HISTORY information added, BTW

1966+ FREIGHT SPOTTING ON THE LIRR that I recall seeing:
1. I'll start us off with RailBox Company (reporting marks ABOX, RBOX, TBOX, FBOX), Berwick/FMC 50' cars

2. Per diem Boxcars built by FMC in Portland 1977+(?) The distinctive "short line" 50' cars in many schemes: McCloud River, PH&D, Middleton & NJ, Providence & Worchester, St. Lawrence, RFP, etc.

3. Thrall All Door Lumber Cars Bennett, US Plywood, Weyerhaeuser, Lignum, Illinois Terminal, Celotex, Boise Cascade, Armstrong

What freight cars reporting marks/type, date, location, etc. do you recall from 1966 forward? Photos to add? :-)

Hi Folks, With 168 views is there no one that has ever seen any freight cars on Long Island since 1966?

Well, since this is the LIRR forum, by definition that excludes any freight cars spotted and recorded after mid-1997 (NY&A).
I only have a few images from 2013, nothing before I can find, so while I can mention the plastic pellet covered hopper spotted by Continental Extrusion in East Garden City off Endo, or the Mech. Reefers spotted south of Zeckendorf for the refrigerated storage facility (now the site of Lowes Home Improvement), or the lone boxcar occasionally spotted for Strober near Price Parkway on Rte 110. (I think that's where the La-Z-Boy outlet is), I don't have any images or reporting marks. I even recall the 2-bay Airslide Hopper parked for the longest time at the then Garden City Intermodal Terminal, sometime around 1989-1990, not to mention the 89ft flats carrying the containers of ash from (IIRC RenFuel) incinerator around the same time)
Heck, I don't even have any images of the centerbeams that Baisley Lumber in Lynbrook used to take before the big fire in October 2000 destroyed that site (well into the NY&A era).

Sorry.

Sir Ray: "...Well, since this is the LIRR forum, by definition that excludes any freight cars spotted and recorded after mid-1997 (NY&A)..." I concur as I was looking to develop the "2nd Transition Era" of c.1968-1978 for documentation and modeling purposes.

Not showing a great deal of freight, but these should scratch your itch.

Thank you to all that are posting on this topic. Perhaps this may focus what I'm trying to accomplish:

What I'm trying to do is get the era of 1968-1978 better documented as it appeared on the LIRR. Thus, it would be the appearance of freight reflecting the period and the stencil/reporting marks to LIRR equipment. (Most notably hacks/gons as they interchanged.)

I'm referring to this era as the "2nd Transition Era" as it may reflect the memories of those born c.1950-1965 and thus would be their/our recollections of what they saw and what to model. Not sure this is happening as the emphasis is still on the 1945-1960 1st Transition era of our parent's OR the current stacks, unit trains, graffiti cars, etc. in the modeling mag media, in my opinion.

Some beautiful work is being done by Matt Snell in this arena, for example: http://railroad.net/articles/columns/al ... /index.php

My kick-off was getting this page going: http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/Freigh ... 201966.htm after many hours trying to get the research correct as the internet is full of opinions, maybes, I thinks, etc. on this era.

The purpose:

1. To post freight photos of cars on the LIRR from this era.
2. A list complied of car types, road reporting marks, paint schemes, location and loads to assist modelers.
3. The per diem series as it visited Long Island and the Fallen Flags schemes.

Thank you all.
