Main-Line Derailment

Just heard over Channel-2 a train just derailed east of New Hyde Park. Sounds serious! If you have a scanner tune in right now on 161.445.

Sounds like it hit something fouling the tracks. Injuries but luckily no fatalities to report from the train.

Crew member just updated 204. Serious damage to first several cars of train. Several injuries, though engineer is okay. Police and Fire personnel on scene and on board the train. Third-rail power de-engergized from Floral Park to Mineola confirmed by 204. Conductor advises train may have struck a piece of a work train fouling Mainline-2.

Sounds like it's closer to Merillon Ave. Station. MTA Police are giving a street location of Railroad Ave. and Old Broadway. That's in Garden City Park, a few blocks east of Denton Ave.

If Conductors are in charge, why are they promoted to be Engineer???

Would PTC have prevented this? How about inward facing cameras?

Timing is everything. The FRA's not going to be pleased with this one.

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A Long Island Rail Road train derailed near New Hyde Park around 9:10 p.m. Saturday.

A Huntington-bound train derailed a half mile east of the New Hyde Park station. The passenger train collided with an LIRR work train.

The first three cars of the 12-car passenger train derailed and the work train caught fire.

So many railroad accidents lately. Metro North, LIRR, Amtrak, NJ Transit, MTA subway. Amtrak also had a work train fouling the tracks which killed transit workers. I remember it vividly since Steve Forbes was on that train.

What is thought to be the cause here? Work train or work equipment fouling main tracks, or derailment from switch adjacent to work train coincidentally? One car at least looked pretty banged up.

One track was out of service and a track car was operating on the out of service track. The Plasser stabilizer car, which was moving on the out-of-service track in the same direction side-swiped and struck the third car. This caused the derailment. Thirty-three injuries; four termed serious. One person had multiple fractures. Seven employees injured. Two M-7 cars substantially damaged.

Do enlighten us, when was the last NYCT subway accident - routine 12/9s don't count...
Metro North has been behaving for the most part since Spuyten Duyvil save for Valhalla (which wasn't even the railroad's fault)...both are looking like the regional golden children these days.
