Yes, if you look to the left of the shoe, you see the actuator cylinder and hoses. How that apparatus was isolated from 3rd rail is interesting I bet.

When we got out to Greenport, we had to get a local dealer who hadn't be screwed out of money by the railroad yet to deliver us more fuel, so I doubt it was rocket fuel or anything too exotic. Heck, maybe it was regular heating oil, but it smelled more like kero.

You can get a gas turbine to run on just about anything from bunker oil to whiskey... (check out the Chrysler Turbine car). I would assume that they either used diesel or heating oil since they would have been readily available in a truck for delivery.
