EMD cooling fans

Postby EDM5970 » Mon Jan 23, 2012 8:46 pm

Can anyone give me an approximate weight for an EMD cooling fan, 36" diameter, as used on a Geep? I may have to design a structure to support a pair of them, and want to get it right the first time.

The EMD 48" AC radiator fan weighs about 900 lbs., so the 36" is likely in the 500-700 lb. range.

Owen, just FYI, your entire post makes no sense.

"50 lbs per" - 50 lbs per what? per fan? clearly that cant be right.
"The a scrap p/u the loco" - I dont have the slightest idea what that is supposed to mean.
"15 year." - 15 year what? what does 15 years have to do with the weight of a fan?

Are the fans on an F40 36"? If so I may be able to give you a definitive answer.

I think the roof-top fans on an F-40 are all 48"… but a weight for one would help in estimating a ballpark figure for how much a 36" fan weighs.

(EMD used 36" fans on types like the F-7 and GP-7, and on such GP-9 as had four radiator fans. They went to 48" for the dynamic brake on late F-7, and simplified the GP-9 by replacing four 36" radiator fans with two 48". I think -- wouldn't want to bet real money that I haven't overlooked an exception, but I think -- that all radiator and d.b. fans on 40-series models, and the radiator fans on 50-series, were all 48".)

Cool, thanks for the info!

The 48" fan assemblies weigh 700 pounds each, and the fan grills weigh 190 each according to my F40PH service manual. Hopefully that can make your estimate for the 36" fans a little easier.
