NYS&W have 3634,3614,3618. 1 is still at dansville for rebuild. They also have one of the probably even fewer f45's. from what i have read, the sd45's were derated to 3200hp.

I found at least 30 number slots for SD45-2s on a Helm roster on Craig Rutherford's Diesel Shop site. Will check back later.

Okay,
I think that I might almost have it now. Thanks again SSW9389 for your info on the subject. After looking through some of the stuff you provided plus a couple other websites I found as well as some books that I had and a couple issues of Extra 2200 South I compiled the following roster of the SD45-2's. First up the easy ones EL, Clinchfield and Seaboard Coast Line, these weren't all that much trouble to track most of them down, however the same cannot be said for the Santa Fe units. Because of all the renumbering that they went through it made it a real bear to try and straighten out, so you might want to double check those numbers. Plus of course you always get those ones where you can't find any info on. Also let me note that it will have to be a bit of a guess as to which ones are still in service, in the roster I have provided the most current number/owner that I could find, but it doesn't guarantee that the unit is in service. Here goes...

Does anyone know if EMD kept marketing the SD45-2 after 1974-75, and if there was any interest in it? Or did the interest "dry out" completely with the 70s fuel crisis?

Last remaining 20-cylinder 45-series unit tracker

Postby mbta1051dan » Sun Jul 13, 2008 8:40 pm

Hello,

This may be a rendundant question, but I am thinking about creating a new tracking thread with the status of all the 45-series units (SD45, SD45-2, SD45T-2, F45, FP45, etc.) that are still operating in the United States with their original 20-cylinder 645 prime movers. Where are they now?

well the NYSW has 3636 F45 with its original 20cyl, but it just had a major turbo failure and supposedly took the engine with it. They also have 2 SD45's with the original 20cyl's. 3618 and 3634, both are still running.

I caught 2 of NS's SD45-2s (with another loco, a UP if I recall correctly, sandwiched in the middle) - the 1701 leading and 1703 trailing heading east/north on the Chemical Coast along side the NJ Turnpike on my way to work yesterday - a nice treat on a really crappy day.

Santa Fe FP45's

Postby daylight4449 » Thu Oct 16, 2008 6:02 pm

this forum is solely for discussion of the pride of ASTF's fleet, the FP45's. now, they're only museum pieces, and i think we should at least try to talk about these "racecars", as what i call them.

Moderators note: Combined into correct thread. If you need to "highlight' this single loco type, you might add a posting in the BNSF Forum. (or see the topic already discussing these locos)Thanks

Re: SD45/F45/SDP45/SDF45/SD45T/SD45X SERIES FORUM

Postby LIengineerBob » Fri Oct 24, 2008 3:53 pm

I figure this might be the correct place to put this. :-D

I'm trying my best to locate at least one decent rooftop photo of the caterpillar repowered SantaFe SD45-2 5855 for a modeling project (especially of the exhaust arrangement (I'd even settle for a somewhat accurate description!!).

My HO scale SD45-2 collection is nearly complete, but finding reference on this beast is turning out to be a real challenge, at least a roof top photo or a decent description.

THANKS for any help!!!!

The CN SD50F fleet has already been mostly retired. Only about 20 remain active. Many have been sold to Helm Leasing.
