What is the average gallons per hour fuel use on the new engines when working hard?

I am going to guess that it would be the same as the SD70M, which is about 190 gal/hr in run-8.

CSXT bought 20 preproduction SD70M's from E.M.D, but what about the other 30? I heard E.M.D had 50 in their test and rental fleet combined.
Ps. What is the story on the SD45T-2M*, would E.M.D sell it?

That unit was constructed so that they could crash-test an SD70M cab without having to destroy an entire SD70m. :)

Crash testing locomotives.... I can't think of a job more fun. Trains all day plus you get to smash em and put 'em back together! :D :P

CSX did not purchase its 25 SD70M's from EMD. They were aquired as part of a trade between CSX and LLPX, the locomotive leasing venture which EMD is part of. CSX traded rougly 150 GP38, GP40, GP15-1, SW1001 and SW1500's for the 25 SD70M's, 3 SD60's and 3 GP60's.

There were only 25 EMD SD70M's to begin with. Only EMD #7000-7002 were preproduction units as they were the test/demo units for the new 70 series model. EMD #7003-7024 were all full production units and were built after the 25 SP SD70M's. These 22 units were built purposely for the EMD lease fleet.

Well its going to be in the pre-production stage soon but well here it goes, EMD has announced it and here it is.


It looks the same as its SD70ACe counter-part but with DC Traction instead........ :wink:

If a railroad were to order a SD70I http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=65609 or a SD75I http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=40304 in 2004 would it be equppied with a nose like Norfolk Southern's 2617 http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=75307 ?

I don't think that's something to worry about, since the SD70ACe has a noise reducing cab that's standard, not an option, and will probably be available in a DC traction version. Plus it's a newer design than the SD70I/75I. It doesn't make much business sense to bring back an old product line when another one is being produced that's better anyway.

no, it wouldnt because that nose is not an isolated cab

it would have a cab like the UP phase 2 SD90MAC's and the test SD70ACe units...

that is the updated version of the "I" cab...

the odd cabs on the NS and UP SD70M's are not isolated

why dont you email all your questions to EMD...

would someone please tell me what model horn is on the 4000-5000 class SD70m's? i would certainly appreciate it. Also while i'm at it, what kind of horns do the Illinois Central SD40's and SD70's have?

The UP SD70M's have a variety of horns. Most have UP's typical horn, the Nathan K3LA/K3HA. A number of them have Nathan P3's, and I think one order has Nathan K5LA's (unusual for UP). I haven't seen any with Leslie horns.

Most IC SD40's have Nathan P3's and P5's, typical of IC. Some also have Leslie S5T's. The SD70's have Nathan P5's.

thanks. BTW where did you get this info? i'm thinking about doing some research on this, so that the next time I go railfanning i can tell what horn a locomotive has :wink:

why dont you just do the research and not ask us then...

you can find your answers rather quickly if you actually put just a tad bit of effort into it

oh, and just a hint, you wont be able to tell the type of horn by just the sound...

you can tune just about any horn to different chords
