Aug. 13, 1946 – The first diesel locomotives on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad are placed in service at Dallas, Texas.

Aug. 16, 1984 - The Connector Line, a joint venture between Union Pacific and Western Railroad Properties (operated by the Chicago & North Western) opened, giving UP access to the Powder River Basin coal fields in Wyoming.

Aug. 23, 1996 - UP and its partners, SBC International and Empresas Ica, filed an application of intent to bid on the 2,400-mile northeast region of the Ferrocarriles Nacionales De Mexicos (FNM).

Aug. 25, 1830 - Peter Cooper's locomotive "Tom Thumb" made a round-trip trial run between Baltimore and Ellicott's Mills, Md.

Aug. 28, 1864 - The first permanent Railway Post Office car for picking up, sorting and distributing mail en route was placed in operation on a run from Chicago to Clinton, Iowa.

As of July 12th 2007 Union Pacific 9838 became the last SD50 on the active roster.
