Deering Junction is where the Maine Central interchanged with the Worcester, Nashua and Rochester Railroad (later the B&M's Worcester, Nashua & Portland Division).

There's still a short stretch of WN&R track left, with a couple of customers on it, I think.

In this Google Maps view you can see some tank cars on it (it's the line that runs parallel to Bishop St and Warren Ave):

Plasmine Technologies, which is at the start of the branch right across Forest Ave receives tankcars and is somehow tied into the paper industry. At the other end of the line near the Turnpike and end of track is the GP/Bluelinx lumber distribution center, where's there's usually a couple boxcars on spot. Inergy Propane also has a siding about halfway down the line and used to receive cars several years ago, so maybe with the resurgence in rail propane they will give rail another shot. The branch itself is in wretched shape. I have always been fascinated with the Deering Jct area as in it's heyday it must have been a HUGE producer of traffic with all the various sidings (mainly now overgrown or paved over) and warehouses/factories (mainly closed) visible on google earth.

FYI: speaking of the Deering area, several cars from the Pan Am/New Brunswick Southern "Blue Nose Service" are delivered weekly to the J.B. Brown's Fore River warehouse off of Read st. (the old First National Stores dist. location). These appear to be paper loads on 50' hi-cube boxes with reporting marks of AOK or CRLE.

thanks all,

It looks like it used to be quite an impressive source or destination of traffic for sure.

Speaking of leased four-axle locomotives on PAR: it was reported today on the GuilfordRailSightings Yahoo Group by "mainemodelrailroader" that GMTX 406 was seen switching at Waterville Yard. 406 is a GP15-1 originally built as Conrail 1660. I've always been rather fond of the GP15 series. They were fun to chase when Safe Handling was operating the Rockland Branch with a few of them.

Is GMTX 406 still on PAR/PAS property?

Gary Young of GuilfordRailSightings reports that a GMTX switcher/slug set are en route to East Deerfield for the hump switcher.
