this morning at 5:30a, a little over an hour ago as i type this, a train went north over the L.I.R.R. mainline. interestingly one of the units had an amber flashing light , i don't know if it was on top of the unit or over the gangway . i do recall some CR units having a small amber light towards the rear of the unit over the gangway. I think these units were ex BN.

IIRC Amber light means the units are equipped for remote operations. When they are operated as remotes, the amber light flashes.

Same train came screaming over hell gate around 5:50, 6AM. Sounded like SD40-2's and it looked like trash cars in the train. It seemed like it was very long too. 70-100 cars? I'm assuming this was CSX. Going to ask around and see if this isn't the (rather disgusting IMHO) schedule change to please the annoying politicians that don't want trash cars at fresh pond which was mentioned on here before.

This train was LOUD. Far moreso than usual. Woke me and probably half the neighborhood up. My AC was on, windows closed, and you could still here it grinding uphill.

...another train northbound over the L.I.R.R. at 5:50a , just over half an hour ago as I type this.

...another train northbound over the mainline of the L.I.R.R. this morning at 5:20a. much more shorter than these other early morning movements of this week.

the amber light was probably the APU warning light.several unit have them, they are only supposedly on when the APU is running but i have seen them come on and stay on all night long.

at 4:45a. this morning, 8/31, light engines crossed over the mainline of the L.I.R.R. south to Fremont. at 5:20a a train went north over the mainline to Oak Point.

...more light engines southbound over the mainline of the L.I.R.R. at 4:45a. a slow moving train then went north over the mainline at 5:40a.

whoever moved this topic from the NY&A to CSX please put it back where it belongs. it is too parochial to be listed under CSX and it is not being viewed by those it is intended for.

a lot of the units we get in oak point have an Aux Power Unit (APU).its a small diesel engine that comes on in cold weather to charge the batteries and keep the coolant from freezing.the lights are there to let you know the unit is on and working .

This is the new pattern thanks to the assholes (sorry, no other word for it) at Christ the King HS.

Crew goes light engines to FP, pulls the cars around 5AM, brings them back to the Bronx, and then apparently comes back later in the day with the loads for NY&A (and probably heads back to Oak Point light engines).

What was once a simple round trip is now 2 trips.

...and the routine continues, light engines southbound over the L.I.R.R. at 4:45a. with a slow moving train returning northbound at 5:35a.

Nice to see and hear about all the action on the Fremont after hours!! I figured another train had run down there overnight, but didn't think it was that active. Thanks for the good info, guys!! :-) Just wish it could be that active during daylight hours!! lol
