How will CP strike affect MMA?

Postby rootsblown » Thu May 24, 2012 8:39 pm

Heard that CP is on strike. So , how extensively is this going to affect MMA's freight movement ? MMA was supposed to start hauling the extra freight of crude oil first of june. What bad timing for MMA again.

Good question.

Rumor has it that there's going to be a big crude oil train coming to Pan Am and going all the way to Maine, where it'll be handed over to Maine Northern or EMRY or whichever arm of NBSR would be handling that; presumably this is a consequence of the strike.

"...presumably this is a consequence of the strike"

1. Being competitors in the Bakken, it's pretty unlikely that crude from any BNSF-local loading points would route via cgo-CP. 2. As overhead carriers, CSX and PAR have likely sharpened their pencils to lessen that chance even further. 3. I'm sure the oil marketers/Irving like nothing more than to keep at least two routing options in play.

The word is out. That's it. MMA is shutting down! They can no longer move any freight west bound. Now, the waiting game to see how much of a squeeze this will have on their wallet before someone throws in the towel.

For the duration of the strike CP is routing traffic between the D&H and the Soo Line/DM&E via NS from Chicago and then over either the Southern Tier to Binghamton or via Horseshoe Curve to Harrisburg, PA. So far a manifest, a Ethanol train and a Crude Oil train have operated over these routes using NS' train symbols for detour trains.

A source for this "word" would be appreciated.

I'm surprised it wasn't in the Bangor Daily Newspaper before they informed the employees. I expect to see it in there this week sometime. All I can say is its the truth.

"Back-to-work legislation looms over CP workers"

http://business.financialpost.com/2012/ ... p-workers/

Looks like the Canadian Government will step in and order
a 120 "cooling off" period in the next few days. But even a
short shutdown has been bad news for the MM&A. Anyone
know if the NBSR is moving former MM&A traffic via CN and
or PAR?

Railroads typically don't screw each other on traffic diversion when it comes to strikes as the shoe can be on the other foot at any time. That being said, The Irvings and whoever else ships over the MMA to non CPRS served consignees is more than likely at least for the time being going to have to use CN and or Pan Am routings.
