During the Winter the Lake Shore gets pounded by the "Lake Effect" storms off the Great Lakes. ADD to that Freights crapping out due to
units failing due to weather conditions. The Late EHH's ideas about locomotive fleet size didn't help as well.

With all the potential problems with the route they really could use the Broadway Limited/Three Rivers back as an alternate between NYP-CHI when bad things happen (like when I took it or on New Year's Eve). Or they should have something like the Crescent Star (New York to Dallas via Meridian) so you can get to Texas without going through Chicago. Anything to avoid snow issues.

I miss the Broadway. Always had a good trip on it.

So does that mean the train is nothing more than a baggage car, cafe and single coach at the moment? (I say single coach because thats what I saw on the westbound about two weeks ago.)

As of Monday night, there was 2 engines and 4 cars on 448-04 into Boston, a V-Sleeper, V-Bag, Cafe, & Coach.

How long have they been doing a single coach? For some reason I always remember:
vbag-vsleep-cafe/lounge-coach-coach

Or is it once they replaced the lounge car with business/cafe that they decided that was good enough?

They may add the extra coach based on the season. I'm fairly sure that when I took 449/448 in July there were two coaches.

Most long distance trains at this time of year are shorter. It's been going on now for a few years. One of the airlines that serves our region cut service by 1/3 last month. That would be 3 down to 2 flights per day to and from DFW.

I hope that it is just coincidence that the "violent deportee" who escaped from JFK was caught near the Chicago Amtrak station (near end of article). If no, maybe not the best advertisement for who you can meet on a train (which will not stop me..)

Just out of curiosity, I checked out booking the Lake Shore from Chicago to New York in the summer to see what kind of schedule popped up. I found nothing to suggest it was terminating in Albany, but for the four random dates I tried, the entire train was completely booked! Is this true or is this Amtrak's way of not taking reservations now because they have no idea what is happening this summer?
