SELECTED ON-TIME PERFORMANCE 1/2/19 THROUGH 1/31/19

Postby shlustig » Mon Feb 04, 2019 1:21 pm

Results for this period are:

TOTAL TRAINS = 1101

ON TIME = 502 (46%)

LATE = 599 (54%)

AVERAGE DELAY = 51"

Of the late trains:
49% were 29" or less late;
22% were 30" to 59" late;
15% were 1' to 2' late;
12% were more than 2' late; and
3% had no arrival time shown.

BY ROUTE, WITH ON-TIME % AND AVERAGE DELAY:

CAPITOL LIMITED
#29 - 21% - 1' 41"
#30 - 21% - 1' 23"

CARDINAL (WAS)
#51 - 90% - 28"
#50 - 64% - 24"

PENNSYLVANIAN
#43 - 48% - 30"
#42 - 41% - 16"

LAKE SHORE LIMITED
#49 - 48% - 1' 30"
#48 - 52% - 1' 01"

LAKE SHORE LIMITED (BOSTON / ALBANY)
#449 - 69% - 41"
#448 - 7% - 59"

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS
#59 - 83% - 1' 05"
#58 - 72% - 52"

CRESCENT (WAS)
#19 - 0% - 2' 02"
#20 - 7% - 2' 20"

DETROIT CORRIDOR
(W) - 23% - 31"
(E) - 27% - 57"

ST. LOUIS CORRIDOR
(W) - 53% - 32"
(E) - 54% - 36"

BUFFALO CORRIDOR
(W) - 13% - 49"
(E) - 64% - 51"

KANSAS CITY CORRIDOR
(W) - 76% - 39"
(E) - 64% - 28"

The number of trains reviewed in this period was quite reduced due to the previously unheard of wholesale
proactive cancellation of services including the STL and DET Corridors, Lake Shore Limited, Capitol Limited,
Cardinal, and BUF Corridor (Empire Services) because of severe winter weather in addition to annulments caused by programmed trackwork on the route of the Crescent as well as other operational incidents.

While Amtrak suspended the above services, it shhould be noted that NS and CSX maintained nearly normal freight service on the same routes and that neither VIA nor freight operations in Canada were suspended during this period.

In view of the foregoing, one cannot help but wonder whether or not Amtrak will have similar suspensions of service in the summer due to the effects of "excessive heat".

SME asked off-line about a comparison with a year ago. While the periods don't match up exactly, they are close.

For 2019, OT % increased from 44% to 46%; Avg. Delay decreased from 55" to 51".

Worst performing services was the Crescent in both years. The Capitol Limited and the KCY Corridor slipped, and the Lake Shore Limited and the City of New Orleans improved, 2019 vs. 2018..

There is no doubt that the number of cancellations / annulments helped the 2019 figures.

GPB asked if NS was the primary cause of the poor showing of the DET Corridor. I have not separated delays
east or west of Porter. However, there are numerous examples of westbound Wolverines being 20" to 45" late
between BTL and Porter and Arv. @ CHI as late or later. Can't really blame NS for delay if they don't get
to NS on schedule.
