Looks like it was idling overnight before working a train to LA in the morning. San Diego is the end of corridor service to LA and the F40 in the picture was common power there until late 1990’s.

Thank you all for the help.

I know very little about Railroads in the the US.

I have managed to catch just the one train on on of my 3 visits to LA and San Diego and that was from Santa Fe to San Diego Old Town ....

BSH: My guess is that this is F40PH #353 at SAN. F40 numbers ended at #415.
The only other possibility is that it could be 253. F40 numbers began at #200.
The pictured F40 color scheme was Amtrak's standard back in the 1980s into the 90s.
The more than 200 strong F40 fleet was the "face" of Amtrak during those years...MACTRAXX

Think of the F40 as a distant cousin of your 57 class. Both use the EMD 645-series engine for longer-distance medium-speed passenger service. And at one time - 1976-2006 perhaps - they were ubiquitous, like the 47/57 class. Now both the F40 and 47/57 series are relegated to special moves and more obscure service. The F40 still hauls a few long distance Canadian trains, just like the 57 class still moves the Penzance beds.

F40s are also still in service on Chicago’s METRA.
