Almost every private corporation and many public institutions sponsor some sort of public service programs. CP, for instance, runs Holiday Trains in both the U.S. and Canada that help collect money and food for food depositories along the CP.
Even CSX runs the annual Santa train to provide good will at Christmas time in the Appalachians.
Amtrak's decision to bow out of the Santa train is the worst kind of public relations. It's such a stupid decision that it's hard to believe that it was intentional. It's more like someone misinterpreted a company directive.
I hope that powers that be change their minds before somebody changes it for them.

Greyhound has some non-profit programs, such as free transportation for organ transplant patients and "home free" program providing free rides home to missing adolescents who are runaways.

CTA delivers food to local communities on its holiday train. From 2011:
Every year, CTA employees enthusiastically embrace the spirit of the holidays and donate time and money to purchase the groceries and assemble the food baskets. The number of community groups requesting food baskets increases every year.

SEPTA also does similar with the "Stop Hunger" program, even using a bus to collect canned food.

Just about every major corporation down to small companies does some sort of community outreach, some year round, most during the holiday season.
This will come back and "bite" Mr Anderson in the "butt" big time PR wise!

Amtrak made the national news on the Toys for Tots issue and they look really bad. Really really bad in my opinion.

Perhaps a moderator can kindly merge this discussion with Amtrak Cancels Albany-area Toys for Tots Train?

Mr. Anderson and Mr. Gardner are certainly going to be on Santa's naughty list this Christmas because of this move and all of their other moves designed to hurt passenger rail ridership in America.

If it's from a flunky, i don't think it would have happened without ol' andy knowing.

This is bad, from an ethical and especially from a PR standpoint

The article quotes Amtrak's statement: "Amtrak will continue to proudly support the Toys for Tots program through the collection of toys at participating stations."

So Amtrak will continue doing what "every other" company does.

Fox dedicated a good segment this morning to the Toys for Tots debacle. One commentator says she is "furious". This is making Amtrak look pretty bad.
