60 Mass Is Now One Mass

Postby Gilbert B Norman » Fri Jan 26, 2018 2:49 pm

Quietly, Amtrak now lists their corporate HQ as One Massachusetts Avenue, Washington DC. Ever since they moved to Union Station, it has always been 60 Massachusetts Ave, or in Forumese, 60 Mass.

Who knows when this occurred, but today was my first knowledge of such.

Will this be the first time Amtrak's headquarters has not been in the same quadrant of the city as the train station?

Can you cite such, Mr. Norman?

Either Amtrak has actually moved its headquarters into either the National Guard Memorial Museum (1 Mass Ave NW) or the National Postal Museum (2 Mass Ave NE), it constructed a vault under the parking lot at 1 Mass Ave SE, it’s sitting at the Dubliner Bar at F and North Capitol... or it’s decided to restyle its corporate address while keeping the same offices as ever. My money is on the latter.

So noted, Mr. Norman. Guess the National Guard Museum will be getting a lot of Amtrak mail!

Leasing agents' signs went up at the 60-Massachusetts-Ave offices at Union Station about a week ago. Imagine - Amtrak must have moved into Union Station in the era of typewriters, filing cabinets, and office law libraries! I seem to recall news that a hotel might go in there. The market is certainly clamoring for it... Just look, and you'll see dozens of people sleeping at the station already.

Aboard CTA Blue Line underground

Mr. Penguin's observation suggests they are moving. Maybe there will be museum for the Compometers (very much in use "back in my day")

The move was reported locally in DC about a year ago. It was not a far move.

According to the link above, Amtrak is downsizing from 106,00 square feet in Union Station to 85,000 square feet on floors 3 through 6 of the National Guard Museum. But, it also implies that Amtrak doesn't own Union Station, since they are moving upon expiration of the office space lease.

This move has been in the works for a while, I thought I heard about it Thanksgiving of '16. I was under the impression they were moving a few blocks up the tracks toward Ivy City, but I guess I was wrong.

It's gratifying to see more renovation work at Union Station. They redid the place around 1990 with the mentality of "ok, the NEC is probably not going away and this place is a total dive, let's clean it up". Today's mentality is of growth and vibrance, and the renovation work reflects the sense that Union Station is a hub of activity now.

About the Amtrak lease at WASH US. Thought Amtrak leased the space from Washington terminal company (?) that is a whole owned subsidiary of Amtrak ( or national rail passenger act )

From Marriott Biscayne Bay Miami

Washington Terminal now consists only of the plant. The station building is owned by Amtrak and USDOT.[1] Union Station Redevelopment Corp. leased to Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation (source: wiki)

The station building is today's station, the little area tacked onto the side of the old station.
