Shuttle connections in New Haven

Postby Jehochman » Fri Jan 19, 2018 8:51 am

I’m writing this to help anybody in the future who wonders what happens when a Shuttle train like 495 is late. Will Northeast Regional 95 wait in New Haven? Yes, to a point. Today 495 is 20 minutes late. Connection time is only scheduled to be 8 minutes. However, 95 is waiting. Thanks, Amtrak.

It's a guaranteed connection. It even shows in the timetable as such.

However, a couple years ago, I was on train 94 and it was running a bit over an hour late. They did not hold the shuttle to Springfield, or, if they did, it was only for a few minutes. So, we 'transferees' were instructed to wait in the station until 148 arrived and take that. I recall it was only 10-15 minutes waiting in the station before 148 arrived.

Perhaps the decision to hold or not hold is somewhat affected by how close the next train in that direction is.

Southbound is the real trick. If there are 300 people on a train, how long do you wait for a Shuttle carrying 50? The answer is at least 15 minutes but not a full hour. You are right the decision may depend upon how long it is until the next train.

Guaranteed connection only means Amtrak will reaccommodate you, not that you will actually make the connection as booked.

at some point the wait would get in way of next train and choice has to be made let original train go and let people wait reasonable time for next train.
If Conductors are in charge, why are they promoted to be Engineer???
