Heritage Baggage Car: Status and Disposition

Postby Gilbert B Norman » Sun May 01, 2016 6:49 pm

There was a recent report here that an H-Bag showed up in a consist of #29, Capitol Limited. There also was a report that H-Bags are used to "fill out" the minimum consist that CN (IC) requires for 390-393, Illini/Saluki.

Any elsewhere?

1717 is on today's 51. All prior ones I have seen for a while have been viewbags, as was yesterday's 50 out of Chicago.

Yes, there are some that are still floating around in revenue service.

Saw three today in a MoW yard off I-95 in Wilmington, south of WIL station. All were the aftermarket Budd coach conversions (single end door).
Since my friend continues to chain smoke nonstop, she is probably an Alco.

Only two of them are the conversion cars one is a regular bag. Those 3 cars have been there a while. One 1700 bag and one regular bag has been in adams yard for a few months now too for "training purposes".

I assume these have floated back in to northeast service to cover warranty repairs on the LDSL cars.

There's been a budd hertiage baggage in Oakland for a while now. Was still there as of a few days ago.

The 3 cars brought to philly are for god knows what. But seems to be a pattern, adams has one regular and one 1700 ex coach, philly now has two 1700 ex coachs and one regular, and so does the yard near YARD interlocking down by the training center.

There has been a Heritage series baggage car on track 19 at the Amtrak MoW base in Cedar Hill Yard for a few weeks. I don't recall the number but it is not a coach conversion.
Another interesting baggage car at Cedar Hill is the former NYC end-door car which has been in use as part of the rail welding plant for quite a while.

All of these sightings of H-Bags come as no surprise. While they are "finished" so far as revenue service goes. they will live on about the system as MofW, C&S, material handling cars.

Some may even be kept IDT/COTS current to move equipment about the System.

I have seen the CNIC route with plenty of H Bags. Will check tomorrow as I'm out to STL on the Eagle.

Haven't seen any H-Bag southward/northward through ALX in many months now. That said, I only see the Silvers and Palmetto, the Carolinian, the Cardinal, and the Crescent. Next time I'm at Union Station or Lorton, I'll check the Capitol Limited and Auto Train.

Auto Train doesn't run with baggage cars, all baggage must be on the train or in the cars.

29(8) had a heritage bag that is returning on 30(9). They try to keep the old bags off the corridor when they can which is why they are unlikely to show up on NYP based LD trains.. However, 66&67 had a heritage sub a few weeks ago since they had a late shopper and used 448's bag.
