I shoot Canon with 1.4 (nee 1.8) glass ...

30 sec on a tripod, the headlights though permeating the frame, did not overwhelm it. subject at approx 30pmh.

f2 (on f1.4) hand held, subject stationary

f1.8 (on f1.8) hand held, subject approx 15mph.

f2 (on f1.4) handheld, subject approx 100mph. (still need more practice, or even a tripod for these shots)
