OUCH! I just checked ABE Books (http://www.abebooks.com), a good source for rare, out-of-print or hard to find books. They have a copy available for $ 399.50. I've owned cars (admittedly years ago) that didn't cost that much!

You must have made a typo, there - your post says $399 - as in four hundred bucks?!? $39.99 I'd gladly pay but I guess for $400 I'll have to pass until I hit the lottery, and I don't even buy tickets.

The internet is both good and bad - it's good in that you instantly were able to locate a copy, and if I wanted it bad enough I'd be buying it already. The bad part is anybody in the used book business can also see what the asking price is, which greatly lessens the chance of stumbling across a copy for $25 in some small shop.

Thanks! - if you find any for a quarter of that price let me know, LOL.

No, no typo, the price is $ 399.50 as in 400+ dollars once you include shipping.

However, from the good news/bad news department:

It looks like "The Boomer" is being reprinted with a pre-release price of $ 11.02 from Amazon, the bad news is that it won't be released until September 19th.

Info on the author providing the introduction, bibliography and glossary:

And, from Amazon.com:

You beat me by an hour, LOL. I just mentioned it to my son, he went on "froogle.com" and thought I was crazy because the first entry was for $11 and change.

You are right, University of Minnesota Press is coming out with a reprint due in September 06. I'll get my order in. And I'm sure glad I didn't have an extra $400 in my pocket, if I had immediately bought the original I would have tossed away $388.

Thanks!

I got it last April (2014) for !5.00 on Amazon. I used to enjoy Bedwell's "true tales (untrue tales) of the rails" in Railroad Magazine of the 1040s. You got authentic terminology out of them.

Interesting: A $400 price tag might be understandable for a rare first edition, but I'm given to understand that Bedwell's book was mostly a compilation of previous short stories, and never published in hardcover.
What a revoltin' development this is! (William Bendix)
