NJT Hiring AC's

Postby Acela150 » Thu Nov 29, 2018 12:21 am

Transit is hiring Assistant Conductors currently. I'll guess to accommodate the folks that went to Engine School.

I did put an app in just for kicks. Any idea on how long it may take to hear something back?

I applied about a year ago. Took them roughly a year to get back to me with a test date. Just recently passed the test, now waiting on the next step!

Just curious if Ticket Collector title still exists at NJT? If so, do they hire for those slots or is it a grandfathered title?

No. That would be under the title of Assistant Conductor.

Thanks for the info. How about rear brakeman, is that a separate title distinct from assistant conductor?

Wrong! The term "Brakeman" is still used at NJT (as well as Amtrak).

Newbies at NJT are hired as TC's (Ticket Collectors)! Eventually they move up to AC.

On a Transit train you will hear the Conductor & Rear Brake on the radio often. The "Rear Brake" is the brakeman working the rear of the train. He/She controls the exterior doors and gives the engineer the 2 on the buzzer when all station work has been completed. The Conductor gives the engineer verbal instruction to move the train once the engineer has the 2 from the brake.

Hmmmm. Good to know. I'm well aware that Amtrak uses the term "flag" for an AC. Is a Brake a second AC??

Our basic train crew consists of three members:

Engineer
Conductor
Brakeman (Assistant Conductor)

Any other "Trainmen" assigned to a train are "TC's" (Ticket Collectors) which can be covered by Conductors, Brakemen/Assistant Conductors or AC's in training as well as those on extra lists.
