NS to donate depot upon expiration of lease with short line Aberdeen, Carolina and Western:

Once needed surveys and paperwork can be completed, the historic structure — at the center of the town once named for a Pennsylvania railroad magnate’s daughter — will become municipal property. The plan then would be to repair the old building and reopen it as a museum dedicated to the history of upper Moore County.

Norfolk Southern Railway owns the depot and the right-of-way, but for years it has leased it to Aberdeen, Carolina and Western, a regional line. Their present lease expires in 2013, and at that time — while working out a new lease with Aberdeen Carolina and Western — Norfolk Southern would be free to make the donation

Another possibility to speed up the gift would be for Aberdeen, Carolina and Western to “sign off” that line’s interest in the depot with a modification to the present lease that takes it out. If that could be done, then Norfolk Southern could go ahead with giving the depot to Robbins without waiting for the lease to run its course.
