ATSF TR4A+ TR4B Sets 2418AL-2819AL

Postby TrainWatcher » Sun Nov 06, 2011 11:11 pm

I have done some research and found out that the ATSF had 2 TR4A/B Sets numbered 2418AL and 2419AL. I purchased a TR4 set today at a train show and would like to repaint them from their current B&O Scheme into one of these ATSF TR4 sets. They were delivered in 1950 to the ATSF. I model 1955, and would like to incorporate them into my operating scheme. However, I cannot find as delivered photos of these sets. I did find photos of them in October 1967 with yellow on the ends and the main carbody is ATSF Blue. Were these the as delivered scheme instead of the earlier Zebra Scheme?? Any prototype help would be appreciated.

This site is always a good one for odd photos:
http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/atsf/atsf.html

The pics are miss-marked as SW9's but the cab numbers you need are correct and were taken in 1967 TR-4's were built between June 1950 and January 1951. Only 15 built 2 for ATSF 2418 & 2419, 5 for BRC 502-506, 2 for C&O 6000 & 6001, and 6 for MILW 2001-2006
From what I am able to find on this link: http://yardlimit.railfan.net/rebuilds/ssb/index.html

ATSF TR4 2418L built June 1950 Rebuilt as SSB April 30, 1979 renumbered 1242. Sold to U.S. Steel # 5A

I would say that they came in the Blue with yellow ends and not in the Zebra paint job.

I think they are in reality SW9's and SW9B slug units they share the same car body and Horse Power and came out right around the same time frame. I can only think or assume that some Railroad asked EMD if they offered an SW with a Slug to be used in transfer service. The 2 TR Units that ATSF ordered were the only TR units built for ATSF by EMD. But from what it looks like on the web page when ATSF started the SSB program they also pulled a small number of SW9's and rebuilt them as SSB's along with a few SW9's also being converted to Slug sets as well. This could be what is leading to people getting a bit lost or confused??

The Santa Fe had some really nice sets of F7 passenger locomotives and I was wondering if any still exist at some museums around the country...

Thank You:

There are 2 an A+B Set. Per a the Wiki F7 Article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_F7

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe No. 347C GM-EMD 1949 F-7A was given as a gift to the museum by the AT&SF Ry in March 1986 and is repainted Super Chief warbonnet colors. This engine is currently listed as operable.

And per "Preserved Diesels- F Units"
http://www.thedieselshop.us/PRSVDemdFs.HTML

F3B- Santa FE 347B- Built as: ATSF 35A- At: CA State RR Museum, Sacremento
F7A- Santa Fe 347C- Built as: ATSF 39C- At: CA State RR Museum, Sacremento

Seen recent photos of these 2, and the caption said they aren't let out much out of the shops.

Those are the last 2. Also you have the restoration of Alco PA1 #59L by the American Railroad Museum in Dallas, TX and will be one 2nd preserved ATSF PA1, the other now being NKP 190 (ATSF 62L). These are the only ATSF Passenger units (minus the few surviving FP45's) in existance.
