UP Big Boy on the move in Texas

Postby UP4141 » Fri Jun 14, 2013 11:03 am

Build Date: December, 1941
Builder: ALCO, Schenectady, NY
Current Status: Static
Road: Union Pacific
Configuration: 4-8-8-4

Union Pacific Steam Locomotive "Big Boy" 4018 may be back on class 1 rails in tow this weekend for relocation, if you have ever seen one of these monster locomotives moving down the tracks you develop a renewed appreciation for hundreds of skilled trades people that may be forever, unmatched in a manufacturing operation in the State of New York ever again. No computers, no cnc machining centers, just natural born skill and rudimentary tools are all that was available back in the steam manufacturing days. Movement of the Museum's Union Pacific locomotive #4018 is scheduled for this coming Sunday, June 16. Hopefully, there are alco fans on this forum with family in that area, that are able to capture pictures and videos.

Well, all right, I guess we'll forgive you this time. :-D That does sound like a cool move to see. What's the reason for the relocation?

The locomotive relocation is because the museum itself is relocating.

Some videos of the move, so far:
East Dallas at Scyene Road (UP track)
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/37506523

Downtown Dallas at Convention Center (UP track)
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/37510153

Downtown Dallas at Union and Victory Stations (TRE tracks)
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/37512507

North Dallas over old Trinity River channel (TRE tracks)
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/37513467

In Irving (TRE tracks)
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/37514511

I wish Big Boy UP 4018 was running on its own steam, but that hasn't happen in almost 50 years. The last time the locomotive moved was in 1968, and I'm not sure it moved then with its own steam.

Expect the Irving to Frisco trek soon.
