Is this the location of "Deep Cut"?

http://binged.it/WQjVDA

It doesn't like there is a deep cut there anymore.

Here's a pic of when the PRR ran through there:

Do any of the mile posts still stand?

Yes, No.

Deep Cut was very long. There is an historical marker next to the road that runs to Nunda between that turn off for Short Tract and Oakland.

They also wrecked it with the redoing of Short Tract Rd.

I'm not sure when Shortcut was redone, the 80s? Anyway I've been there. When you stand on the road and look in either direction and see how big the chunk is they dug out by hand, you know why it's Deep Cut and have a sense of awe at how horrible it must have been. It's why we have earth-moving equipment.

I don't remember seeing any mile posts. There is still a deep cut, but because they didn't put in culverts when they filled in where the bridge was, it's now backed up with enough water to look like the canal. The Chautaqua Rails-to-Trails have the same problem in two places. Filled-in bridge and a cut filled with water.

Russ, did you ride the Hinsdale section?

I've hiked it the l past 2 weekends and did some work clearing brush. It is very overgrown in places.

The Greenway has a "Friends" page on Facebook:

Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway (FOGVG)

https://www.facebook.com/groups/119546884730693/

It only has 10 members. Please join the FB group if you hike/photograph/ride the Greenway.

Hmmmm..... I see that I edited it at some point in OSM, but I completely neglected to ride it. I didn't have time on my way south -- it started to rain and was nearly pitch dark by the time I got to Hinsdale on that Saturday, but I could have ridden it Sunday morning if only I had remembered it existed. It's only about 1km long, but I'll put it back on my todo list.

I hiked a bit of the Greenway near Portageville and at Mt. Morris last Friday:

Bridge piers still stand for the former PRR bridge over the Geneseee River at Portageville:

What were these stones for:

Those may cut stone salvaged from a canal lock then left unused by the railroad.

The WNY&PA (or PRR) occasionally salvaged cut stone from abandoned canal structures for use along the railroad. An example can be found at Lock #2 in Chili. Most of of the top course of stone block of is missing from the east wall of the lock chamber. The blocks were moved several miles south and dropped around a culvert near Oatka Creek, apparently to reduce bank erosion around the culvert entrance during the spring runoff.

The section of the Greenway south of NY-305 (south of Belfast) is much fun for a railfan, as the Erie runs right next to the PRR for a while. Just south of the parking area are two+two bridges, all of them in place.

I did some hiking on the Greenway at Rockville Lake back in early November. This section is wide and very well maintained:

Then I hiked at Piffard:
