Coil Steel cars in Charlotte (Rochester)

Postby C2629 » Tue Dec 30, 2008 8:52 pm

Looks like more car storage in the Rochester area. There is at least one string of "coiled steel" cars parked just west of Lake avenue in Charlotte. I could also see another string of cars parked a little farther west but it was getting dark and I couldnt tell what kind of cars they were.

I didnt know there were so many different styles!
interesting cars..

At first I speculated that maybe these cars are intended for the Russel station rebuild..
(coil cars carry wire..rebuilding of an electric plant would require..lots of wire!)
but that theory has been pretty much debunked..they are simply being stored by CSX,
because the track is available for storage.

Thanks for the pictures! It makes me very happy to see that these tracks are still in use, even if only for storage.

Nice shots, Scot, thanks for sharing. Quite a variety of coil cars there.

You would have walked right past my old apartment to get some of those photos...

I was wondering if CSX was gunna use that trackage for storage since they've been sending cars to Shortlines for storage. I mentioned in another post that in the Fonda, NY Yard, there is a couple hundred of these cars stored, next to the ML's. I'm surprised the Ontario Midland hasn't gotten anything to store in Newark and East of Wallington, NY on their idle trackage.

I'm guessing CSX is going to use up every last foot of track to store cars before they have to start paying shortlines. With traffic down - there's probably more room in yards and on sidings.

Well, thats what I mean les, FingerLakes Railway has received 200 autoracks for storage, and NYS&W is storing dozens of ML's on their Utica main. Figured the OMID should be getting in on some action. They seem to have a few miles of currently underutilized track. Today I noticed that every siding from Onieda to Fonda is stuffed with stored railroad cars.

a bit south, Railpace reported that up to 500 steel coil gondola cars were to be stored on the Cape May Seashore Line main.

Heck, if I had a museum or tourist line and I had some track I wasn't using, I'd have cars in storage, even if it was just a handful.

hell Finger Lakes has Boxcars stored in Senica Falls and almost 50+ Gondolas as well as a handfull of 2 Bay covered Hoppers stored in Auburn. Yet they do manage a train that seems to range between 4-30+ cars a day in both directions Which to me is still not to bad for a slow economy.
no matter the weather or the country I'll still be trackside!
