Russell Station Engines to R&GVRRM

Postby scottychaos » Fri Sep 12, 2008 8:25 pm

The two GE centercab switchers have left Russell station..

as of 4pm today, Friday 9/12/08, they are sitting inside the Kodak gate, coupled together,
south-west of the Ridge Road crossing..
they are visible from Ridge Road, on the "R&S side" of the tracks..
which is odd, considering they had to come out via CSX..

perhaps they are headed to Dansville for some work?
or perhaps R&S is going to interchange them to NS at Silver Springs..
but im just guessing..I dont know.
anyone know their destination?

it would be possible to get some telephoto pics from public property on Ridge Road..
although the fence would be in the way..

They are the smaller yellow switcher, and the larger black & red switcher, as discussed on page 3 of this thread.
I didnt have a camera as I drove by after work today.. :(

(edit.."page 3 of this thread" is actually this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=128&t=41441
someone split the topic and formed a new thread)

If they are still there on Monday, I might see if Kodak security might let me get close to take a few pics..
(I work at Kodak)

I think they're on storage tracks. The "side" of the tracks is irrelevant - they can go out either way.

well yeah..I suppose..
but if they were going to go out "all CSX" I dont see why they would need to bother the R&S about it..
unless Kodak moved them there without ever crossing the R&S..which is possible..

but I guess none of that is terribly important! ;)
I just found it interesting..

anyway..keep an eye out for these engines!
they will probably be heading out of Rochester soon..

Scot,

To stop the guessing... Thanks to the continued support of RG&E, the engines are now the property of the Rochester Chapter NRHS and its Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum which is their eventual destination to join their fellow stablemate, RG&E #1941. They will not be leaving the area. With the museum's interchange switch and sidings undergoing construction/replacement this summer/fall, our friends at the Kodak Park Railroad agreed to hold them for us for a while in safe storage since RG&E needed to get them off of their property in order to complete the shutdown down of Russell Station. Final plans for shipment to the museum have not been finalized. We will have pictures of the engines posted to our website soon.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. The 110-tonner is fully serviceable while the 45-tonner will need some engine & cosmetic work before it will be back to 100%. We are in the process of completing a multi-year restoration on RG&E #1941, the BeeBee Station switcher, so we are getting pretty good at working on these little fellows. One thing we would appreciate it is any historic background on the engines, i.e. build dates, previous owners, etc. We are in the process of building up that information. We already know the 110-tonner belonged to the Berkshire Scenic and it appears GE before that. You can see it here in this picture.

Additionally, we would welcome donations to our Locomotive Preservation Fund which helps us to continue to preserve our motive power fleet. Thanks to the donations of many people and the NRHS Heritage Grant program, we just reached the fund's first goal to purchase and take delivery of a new set of starting batteries for Lehigh Valley Railroad #211. The batteries came last week and will be installed as soon as we do some work on 211's battery boxes which just had their old batteries removed.

Thanks for the continued interest!

The Kodak Park RR goes under the Charlotte Runner and R&S Belt Line south of Ridge Road - so they can access either interchange track.

We had to do a little work to get the dead engine feature to function correctly on the 45 tonner. I took this photo after one of our work sessions:

It's going to be great to reunite "Old Yellow" with her sister, RG&E 1941! :-D

Did the 110 ton unit come down to Kodak Park under its own power?

Les,

No. They were delivered to Kodak shutdown and dead-in-tow.

The two locomotives left Kodak yesterday, 12/3/2008.

Presumably hauled south by R&S, then picked up by LAL at either Brooks ave yard or Genesee Junction.
The units spent the night last night in Avon.

Data on the two locomotives gathered from other threads:

"Old Yellow" is:
RG&E GE 45 ton, no RG&E road number.
Builder's #30487
Built April 1950
nee Quebec Iron & Titanium #3 (Allard Lake Mine, Havre St. Pierre, Que)

The Red engine is:
RG&E #8.
Ex-Berkshire Scenic #8, nee-GE Pittsfield MA #8 (2nd).
Built 10/67. Builder's number 36324.
110 ton GE centercab, phase IV-B1.

Scot,

Locomotives actually left Kodak on Tues. 12/2 via the R&S, but who's counting. The engines are now safely on the property of the R&GVRRM after being delivered this AM by the LA&L. Pictures and videos of their delivery to follow soon.

Very cool!

Perhaps you could bring some photos to the RIT Show, I'm sure that you could work out some display space (if you haven't already!) and maybe generate some interest and support for the cause...

Looking forward to seeing these next year at Industry...

I'd also request that if you want to see these engines youself, please do not enter our property without permission. They are currently stored in an area not readily accessible to the general public. There's usually people working at the museum most weekends, so contact us to see if we're available to show you around. It's merely a safety issue, no secrets.

Anyone here is also welcome to send me a PM if you'd like to take a look. Like Otto said, please refrain from doing your own exploring. We will gladly show you around!

Furthermore, we will be holding our monthly motive power meeting next Saturday, December 13, 2008. Please feel free to come out to see what it is all about! We are always looking for new volunteers. The meeting will be held at 12 noon at Industry depot. Bring your lunch! :-D

Thanks!
