NYS&W #3006 C430

Was NYS&W #3006 stored during 1987? I can find photos of it running later in 1987. This photo from 6/87 shows it in Binghamton and it looks like damage under the cooling system. I think by 1988 it was rebuilt/painted.

That track it's on was typically used for units in storage.

See here too in Aug 1987.

I know several C430 had accidents but I can't recall the timelines anymore. Thanks!

I can't add much except to say that she wasn't one of the two winter casualties from February 1987 derailments. Those were the 3002 and 3004.

She was stored because of serious mechanical issues and listed for sale according to the January 1988 Trains article about the railroad. The roster in the article was effective as of September 15th 1987, so she certainly could've came back out late that year.

I would assume though that the Guilford retreat from the D&H in 1988 and the Susquehanna stepping in as the designated operator, is what led to her return to service for the Susquehanna?

I realize dates can be wrong. I based my service dates on this series of photos:

I don't think this photo is correctly dated, if that's the one making you wonder if she was returned to service later in 1987.

I say that because #3002 and #3004 both were wrecked in February 1987, and were never repaired and reactivated.

NYSW 3006 arrived at Rome Locomotive in September 1988 with engine failure. I believe it had been out of service since sometime early in 1987.

It sat at Rome for a long time, finally being taken into the shop with a work order and contract on 12-24-1989.

It was out shopped 3-31-1990 with engine / alternator from 3004 (I think) and new paint.

So was any of the 4 still operating in mid-late 1987?

It's perhaps not a full answer, but the Trains roster I've previously mentioned that reflects the line's roster as it stood on September 15th 1987, shows #3000 as in-service but for sale. So it would seem that at least one of the five was out there rolling (The article says she was "running on locals out of Binghamton" during late 87).

#3002 and #3004 were of course stored unserviceable due to wreck damage and also marked for sale, while #3008 shared the status that #3006 had, which was " stored unserviceable, for sale".

The question mark I suppose is #3008. But considering she went into storage in 1986 with major engine damage, was listed as stored OOS in September 1987, and was scrapped even before the two wrecked units were before the 80's were out, I very much doubt she ever was repaired and briefly reactivated.

Also just realized the D&H under Starrucca Viaduct is still in place in that photo, yet were pulled up a bit before that picture is listed as having been taken.

The 3000 was the last one operating. It ran as late as late October 1987 but had a mismatched traction motor installed sometime prior to mid - October 1987. The unit would go into wheel slip and stall out. Come to find out later a 74:18 gear ratio motor was installed where an 81:22 motor should have been installed screwing up the wheel slip controls. It also had water and fuel leaking into the lube oil and many other issues.

It arrived at Rome Locomotive on February 15, 1988 and sat until a PO was issued to create a work order whereby it was moved inside on December 27, 1988, and out shopped on April 4, 1989. Had engine rebuild, truck rebuild, traction motor repair, new wheels, paint, repair of the aftercooler, repair of the intercooler and other work; new injectors, rebuilt fuel pumps, new cam bearings, rebuilt draft grear, new gaskets in piping and couplings, rebuilt heads with new valves and other such stuff.

NYSW 3008 never was restored to service, it lingered into about 1989 at Little Ferry with NYSW 2000 and was scrapped. No parts that I am aware of were ever used on the 3000 or 3006.
