Rochester traffic dwindles - do we still need the CSX main?

Postby BR&P » Sun Apr 01, 2018 12:49 pm

Well, the only constant is change itself. Most recently, Kodak ended its use of coal. Since R&S serves the plant, and in-plant switching is done by a GWI subsidiary anyway, there really is little reason for CSX to keep the Charlotte branch.

So to re-visit the topic from a while back, at what point does CSX decide to just go straight through Rochester? And how much could they save in taxes, and make by the sale, by getting rid of the line through the city and putting more traffic on the Shore? Yes, Slaughter Station would probably be an argument for keeping the line where it is. But the Mayor did away with the Inner Loop because it "divided the city". Just think what she could do with the removal of the railroad.

What say ye?

I think the M-F scheduled CSX trains are down to 30, plus any oil/alcohol/grain trains. Add in Amtraks and the total would come out in the high 30’s to low 40’s. With a few less on weekends. If they moved everything, including Amtrak, to the shore, things could get bogged down since that would be over 20 miles of single track. With the length of some of the trains these days they would need to add a couple of 15,000 ft sidings to keep things somewhat flowing. And thats assuming the dispatchers were on top of things. Is there room for a couple of those sidings without blocking a few highways, probably not. So I dont know if it would be feasible, but if the train count continues to dwindle, it might be.

Amtrak has a brand new station in Rochester, and frankly, moving 30 freights onto the West Shore would not be a smart operating plan. No need to create a choke point where one does not currently exist.

Or... do they still need the West Shore? I haven’t sat in Fairport or Chili recently enough to observe.. are they using the West Shore as an expedient bypass or is it serving as the passing siding more often? It just seems to me they send a lot of freight through the city instead of bypassing.

This was a funny 4/1 joke...but a year ago there was some thought about CSX drawing up a plan to single track the CSX main across NY State. Fortunately, the plan never got air time...

Gee....if this was an April fool's joke, why not go all the way and suggest using the old LVRR right-of-way?

Sure, use the Corning to Geneva, the LV to Batavia, and back on the NYC. Only cost a few billion.

Actually, any of tis is possible with the right wording.

All you have to do is tell the politicians that either the FAA, the Federal Highway Administration, or, yet another bike path needs to be built.

Then all you have to do is sit back and watch the endless billions pour in. :-D

Hey, rebuild the Auburn road and re-introduce passenger service so I can take it to work!
