Steam on the Adirondack Scenic! (video)

Postby ut-1 » Sun Aug 13, 2017 8:26 am

Yesterday, Viscose No. 6, a 0-4-0 saddletank built by Baldwin in 1924, barnstormed into Thendara to help Adirondack Scenic celebrate its 25th anniversary. Owing to the special nature of a steamer visiting Thendara, I thought this merited a separate thread.

Here's a short video I took showing No. 6 prepping for its first run with footage also from the cuploa of an ex-B&M caboose of the morning's first run (No. 705, an EMD SW1 switcher was in front while Viscose No. 6 brought up the rear}:

I wonder how they got by the regulations regarding fire in the Adirondacks at this time of the year? Years ago the New York Central had to use oil burners in the summer months, they went back to cold in the snowy weather. Nevertheless they are interesting shots and thanks for posting them.

Noel: A hi-rail shadowed the steam excursions and was carrying fire-fighting equipment (Indian pumps shown in second-to-last photo). Three MOW guys were in the hi-rail no doubt looking for any flare-ups. Note also the fire hose on the freight house platform in the third photo. I assume these steps were taken to help obtain permission from New York state if necessary.

I think the law about using coal sunsetted a few years ago. As noted, there was a fire patrol as well.

All in all, things were pretty green, and pretty wet after an afternoon rainshower dampened the area.
