The Adirondack Railway Preservation Society will be looking for a new Executive Director.

Bethan Maher was hired by the American Heritage Railways to head up the Mount Rainier Railroad and Logging Museum in Washington. She was executive director of the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society, which operates the trains under the ASR name.

The Adirondack Park Agency is looking to redefine a "travel corridor" to continue efforts to dismantle the rails into Lake Placid.

https://www.adirondackexplorer.org/outtakes/adirondack-rail-trail

The Adirondack Park Agency will consider amending the State Land Master Plan next week to allow the state to create a thirty-four-mile rail trail between Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
... The proposed amendment to the master plan is in a draft environmental impact statement prepared by the APA staff. If the APA board approves the document, the agency will hold hearings next month before making a final decision. The hearings are tentatively scheduled for April 11 in Ray Brook, April 24 in Old Forge, and April 25 in Albany.

It's not hard to see that the anti-rail folks have been busy lobbying the APA on this.

ARTA and their ilk want the rails up so they can turn the corridor into forever wild (sorry snowmobilers and hikers - you're collateral damage).

Which basically means "If you can't win the game legally, yank out your checkbook and get the rules changed."

The resident Lake Placid sledheaded wingnut on the ARTA board seems to really believe that him and his little sledding buddies would still have use in the forever wild lands, but then again we know his common sense is severely lacking

Wasn't the GP9 vandalized?

That site makes you log in now to see any details.

It was, and was repaired.

AFAIK, no one was ever charged.

Are they going to be able to resume service to Lake Placid or is that another legal battle playing out to get that back?

The "compromise" was to lift the rails between Tupper and Placid and build a trail.

With the judge having ruled that they made that decision improperly, we now have to wait to see if the state appeals the ruling, and the result of that appeal.

There's some big money behind getting the rails lifted. It's going to be an uphill battle.

I doubt you'll see operations there this year. We'll see what happens after the appeal, if that happens.

Just to give everyone a heads up. The deadline for comments to the APA on their end run around the ruling handed down on their attempt to destroy the railroad is Monday, May 7th. The address to send comments via e-mail is SLMP_comments@apa.ny.gov the option favored by many supporting the railroad is option 1, which means do nothing.
The APA has deliberately attempted to limit public comment by rushing the public comment period to a quick conclusion, not holding hearings other than in snowmobile and ARTA friendly locations, and to confuse matters further, named this little dirty work proposed as option 6, which previously the option preferred by the 1996 unit management plan and railroad supporters. I would encourage all railroad supporters to e-mail at least something in support of option 1, and preservation of the railroad. There is reason to believe that the APA
is taking comments only to make it look like this is a public discussion, and not that Lee Keet and Cuomo have already dictated the outcome. Some comments have been believed to been "lost" by the APA in this sham of a discussion. If you write and submit comments, be sure to save them and the date and time they were submitted. This isn't over yet.

I'm sure Tony Goodwin will appraise the APA decision makers and Mr. Keet that possibly some pro rail comments may need to be well, "reviewed".

Save the discussion on here. Spend that time writing and submitting comments to the address above, and copy your local newspaper and elected official. The APA proposal is available for viewing on their user unfriendly website.

No less than the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter has come out in favor of ... [wait for it] ... The Railroad.

Read it here: http://www.adirondackrr.com/adkrr/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/SLMP-Comments-Sierra-Club-May-2018.pdf

While the "trail advocates" may poo-poo the input from the "rail hobbyists," it's a little harder to ignore the comments of a conservationist group.

For the record, I snail-mailed my comments last week.

Now that the state has declined to appeal Judge Main's ruling:

Will trains run from Saranac Lake to Lake Placid this year?

If they were to reopen the line, would it make it harder for the trail group to remove the rails?

I doubt you would see trains this season - there is a lot of track to rehab.
