The court ruling could be a face-saving way for the administration to change it's mind and go back to railroading. Or is that too much to hope.

The end of the article struck me...
[?Tupper Lake?] Village Mayor Paul Maroun said passenger trains would be a good form of mass transport, connecting three major Adirondack villages to downstate and the rest of the country. He has also supported a trail beside the rails, which state agencies said would not be feasible.

“I know that in my heart I always thought the rail should keep operating because I think it’s a way of mass transportation into the heart of the Adirondacks,” Maroun said. “From being a naval officer, you don’t tear up a strategic type of transportation — in fact, in this area, one of the few strategic types of transportation into the heart of the Adirondacks.”

I suspect you'd see a pretty good fight if someone tried to get trains running in the winter along the corridor.

Fair point. It would be interesting to see if the ski lobby wanted to confront the snowmobile lobby. I'm not sure it would happen.

Nobody ever mentions the fact that a New York ballot proposition would create many new bike trails in the Adirondacks, if approved. If they are serious about bike trails, shouldn't the trail people devote their energies to the passage of said proposition, instead of trying to destroy the railroad?

https://ballotpedia.org/New_York_Propos ... ment_(2017)

"The proposed amendment also will allow bicycle trails and certain public utility lines to be located within the width of specified highways that cross the forest preserve while minimizing removal of trees and vegetation."

The only thing they're serious about is getting rid of the railroad. There are a number of individual agendas involved - all center on getting rid of the rails.

I would appear that the trail advocates are eyeing more than just the ADIX rails for conversion to trails.

A Legal Case Against Storing Tank Cars In Adirondacks

"When Iowa Pacific acquired the line, it hoped to transport waste rock from the mine, but so far the company has been unable to find customers. If it clogs the line with empty cars, Woodworth said, it will be impossible to use it for transportation. In essence, he contends, the line will cease to be a railroad—in violation of the easement.

In fact, the corridor has not been an active railroad for many years. Woodworth said he’d like the state to initiate condemnation proceedings to reclaim its Forest Preserve lands. (The siding is on Forest Preserve.) If the tracks were removed, he said, the corridor could be converted into a recreational trail."

Once again the trial zealots need to get their facts straight. The line was used to move about 30,000 tons of stone from Tahawus in the last couple of years plus at least 2 shipments of Garnet for Barton mines. So it has not been inactive for years. Don't let facts get in the way of your agenda.
