Trackage Through Swedesboro

Postby SEPTAR3kid » Mon Jun 28, 2010 9:31 am

Are the tracks that cross 322 north of Swedesboro part of the "Salem Secondary"? Is it all Conrail Shared Assets operations along there and if so, how frequent are trains through that area?

Those tracks are Conrail's Salem Running Track, which sees trains 2-3 days per week. Movements over this line contain cars that are destined for interchange with SRNJ at Swedesboro.

Movements are at 10MPH.

I don't know what reporting marks they are using, but the interchange at Swedesboro is now with US Rail, NOT with SRNJ. Has been since, what, December?

Oops - brain fart. You're absolutely correct of course :)

Got so used to referring to SRNJ over the years down there.

A week ago today I drove through Swedesboro on my way to Cape May and noticed the tracks were rusty and very overgrown with brush. Is rail service still active on this line?

Bridge work north of Swedesboro has the line shut down for several months. Since Anchor Glass in Salem shut down there is hardly any traffic left - a couple of cars of telephone poles a week and occasional loads to the feed mill at Woodstown .

What bridge, out of curiosity? I'm guessing we will see this line abandoned in the near future. Industry in Salem is gone and never coming back, unfortunately.

Presumably the bridge over Mantua Creek, about 3 or 4 miles south of Woodbury. This was mentioned in a piece by Steve Barry in Railfan and Railroad magazine. I think you are probably right about the dismal future of this line.

No work occuring on the Mantua Creek bridge visible from Kings Hwy. I live right up the street. It must be the one just south of US 322 and North of downtown Swedesboro. I think that's the Racoon Creek? That's the only other waterway crossing on the Conrail-owned section. I agree, this line will see abandonment shortly.

I just saw the SRNJ GP9(?) parked north of the turnpike bridge. The last time I was by there (Thursday) it wasn't there. Anyone know anything about this?

If you look at the Google Maps view of the intersection of Kings Hwy. and Ogden Road ( actually Ogden Rd and the RR crossing ), the Geep can be seen spotted adjacent to Grasso Foods in a shot from July 2016.
