Consider they just had two coal trains in the last few weeks. The last one left monday night..

I remember Easter's past where there would be a V-779 sitting on the siding at Milmay. It is about that time where they start stockpiling for the summer. With the current price of crude, I'm somewhat surprised that it's been all coal lately.

I believe they only have one coal burner in operation. I remember and miss those days. I guess they order as they need it but they've only been getting a handful of coal trains per year the last couple of years. 😞

Both natural gas and nuclear are substantially less expensive than coal or oil so the units only get dispatched when loads are higher and/or needed for reliability in the area. That part is below the Block Bart- or just below Winslow.....not that far down but 51 runs to Tuckahoe sometimes to drop off/pick up stored cars...

The plant is online for the second consecutive day. I wonder if this is due the fire at the Indian Point nuke plant in New York?

I would imagine the price of electricity went up when Indian Point's 1GW capacity went down. The higher prices would be driving other plants into profitability to operate, at least until Indian Point is fixed.

Most of the time the prices in the PJM RTO are lower than in the New York ISO so the tie lines tend to be fully loaded much of the time from PJM into NY. I don't think Indian Point is the reason, though it might factor in somewhat. More likely is that the current hot weather is occurring in the shoulder period between the winter peak and summer peak periods. June 1st is the start of the PJM peak summer period and I think NY ISO's is the same date. Most generation outages for maintenance are scheduled during the spring and fall shoulder periods since demand is less. That changes when unusually hot weather drives up demand so higher cost generating units not currently in maintenance outage status can successfully bid into the market.

The coal burning at the power plant is living on borrowed time. When it finally does end, will there be enough non-coal business to support keeping the line in service, even if they have to lower the speed to 10 mph?

I read somewhere on-line the other day the gas pipeline to Beesley's was approved by some end-around maneuver recently by the Pinelands Commission chairperson, after the committee voted it down a number of months ago. JS
