That's a question I can't answer. I assume they had a reason but I'm not privy to what that reason was. I'll see if I can find out.

Weird seeing an RDC moving under it's own power, and not in B&M paint! Have never seen a B&M boxcar that wasn't faded paint.

I bet it has something to do with the constant ringing of the bell. Mounted on the cab would be very loud in the locomotive (no A/C, windows open) and may make it difficult to hear car counts.

The box car was a pleasant surprise.
I also noticed this past weekend the 4268 has had some work done to it; could we possibly see new paint on this unit in the coming weeks?

I stopped by the 470 table, and they said work is in progress. They've completely cleaned out 4268, and are preparing to move the prime mover from 1757. It's progressing well. He said it will take some time to do wiring and such after the pm is moved.

Oh really, I thought that project had been canceled.

I actually talked with one of the people doing the work (prepping 4268 to receive the pm). It was delayed, not cancelled. They're making some forward progress.

I told them they need to get up to Gorham and get 4265 running after! They said they'd love to find a B-Unit. The only surviving B-Unit has been painted as a different railroad (in NJ I think), so that one isn't available.

It’s probably way too soon to know this for sure, but do you guys think that there may be future trips to Whitefield based off of the success of this past Sunday? (Nothing regular of course, but maybe more railfan’s weekend specials, etc.) I sadly chose not to do the 3 hour drive each way in the heavy rain, but definitely feel that I missed out on a really cool event and picture opportunities. I’d like to think that more trains will visit Whitefield in the future!

They got asked that on their Facebook page and said they don't have any planned, as they had to get FRA permission to do it. Maybe next year for railfans day but I don't see them doing it during the regular season.

I'm a little confused why they would have needed FRA permission beyond the possibility that the track is kept in "Excepted" status?

I'm not sure why either but that's what their responses on their Facebook page were about further trips to there. It probably also has to do with it being a different railroad too as their right of way ends at Whitfield.

On the ride, a NHCR engineer had to take over the train 3 miles before Whitefield, because we were at the end of CSRR's tracks. I'm sure that's part of the issue in making it a regular thing. I do hope they add it as a permanent part of RF Weekend.

NHCR deserves just enough credit to allow this to happen. They could have easily of said no

also another side not, Dwight Smith was on the train. I bet he could have never imagined his railroad running a train to whitefield!

OPM Hallett has posted his September Wheel Report with lots of details on
the "Red Ball Express" special train across the diamond at Whitefield on 9/3.
Many Thanks to Mr. Hallett and all the other personnel and agencies involved
to bring this historic event to fruition.
