New park/rail trail similar to High Line for Jersey City?

Postby railtrailbiker » Mon Aug 22, 2016 2:53 pm

JERSEY CITY — A Berlin architecture firm has teamed with a local arts organization to present a wild new plan for the historic Bergen Arches that would turn the former rail corridor into a massive new public park.

Renderings courtesy of So + So Studio show the currently overgrown and unused Bergen Arches replaced by elevated walkways, a bike lane and open green space. The mile-long former rail line, which runs mostly parallel to Route 139, is a narrow passageway burrowed through a portion of the Palisades in the early 20th Century to bring Erie Lackawanna Railroad passengers to the Pavonia Avenue terminal.

Gregory D. Edgell, of local production company Green Villain, said the idea of creating a Bergen Arches park has been percolating for nearly a decade. Transforming the abandoned track into usable open space would give balance to the real-estate development happening all over the city, Edgell said.

It's important to save "the last bit of old Jersey City before it in itself is developed or done something with that doesn't benefit the people of Jersey City," he said. "We're very much trying to save any bit of public space that's left because that you can't ever get it back."
