Reminder of Providing Links and our Brief, Fair-Use Policy

Postby Jeff Smith » Mon Mar 26, 2012 10:45 am

Hey all,

I came across an interesting story today on the future of passenger rail (posted it here: Is Passenger Rail Doomed?)

Anyway, while quoting a few paragraphs, a link came up with the copy/paste, and it serves as a reminder to all of our users about our policy of quoting from news or other third-party sources.

Our policy is that when discussing news stories or information from third-party sources (such as blogs) here and quoting content, members must:

-Provide a link to the original work.

-Provide a quote from the link consistent with "brief, fair-use" description provided below.

-The quote provided should be relevant to the discussion.

-The quote provided should provide the proper context of the discussion.

-The length of the quote should be appropriate, but never longer than a couple to a few paragraphs. Note: in a short news brief, the actual length of the article may only be a paragraph or two. Be judicious.

This is a brief part of the Denver Post's policy:

But fair use of our content restricts those who want to reference it to reproduce no more than a headline and up to a couple of paragraphs or a summary of the story. (We also request users provide a link to the entire work on our website). The fair use rule generally does not entitle users to display the whole story or photograph on their website. To do so is a violation of our copyright and we will use all legal remedies available to address these infringements.

Read The Denver Post's Terms of Use of its content: http://www.denverpost.com/termsofuse

Notice the link they embed in the copy paste; the quote is from that link.
