Veteran's Day 2009

Postby John_Perkowski » Wed Nov 11, 2009 4:39 am

Whether you call it Armistice Day, ending the First World War...

Or you call it Veteran's Day, and honor those who served who are among us...

If you value the freedoms you have as an American, stop for a moment today and thank a Veteran. :)

I'll start by thanking one of the Deans of the Amtrak board, Gil Norman, USAF commo during the Viet Nam era :) Thank you!!!

Will Amtrak’s Empire Builder be halted for 2 minutes silence as it will be running on Canadian Pacific between La Crosse and Tomah Wisconsin at 11am?

From someone whose National Service has been in politics and local government, most recently as Judge of Elections, I want to thank all of you who risked their lives that I might have an election to judge.

THANK A VET... My dad was an MP at Fort Dix and Fort Belvoir during WWII, my Uncle Otto flew low-altitude bomber missions on the "Burma Road" for the Army Air Corps in WWII, my Uncle Alfred served in the Army Signal Corps during WWII, and my Uncle Ernie stormed the beaches at Normandy and saw combat in the European and Pacific theatres "for the duration." I called up my Uncle Otto and Ernie today and thanked a Vet...

Really appreciate that gentlemen. I made it through the Viet Nam conflict with the USAF. Now I just fly off the handle. Dangerous days. I still have fond memories of buddies that did not return.

I salute all those who have served honorably in the armed forces of the United States including both of my children, Caroline Fuller USAF and Johnathan Fuller USMC. Both Iraq War veterans who came home relatively healthy and sane.

Thank you for this thread.

A big thank you to all of our veterans for your service and sacrifice.

A special salute to my father-in-law, who was a POW in Korea for three years. He made it home...somehow.

One American Veteran of World War One still lives: Frank Buckles of West Virginia. Let's remember him before he's gone.

Yes, this is an international event, especially in England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and especially France.

Thank you and blessings to all who have served.

Thank you to all who carry the flag today from those of us whose honor it was to carry the flag before them, and continue to carry it in their hearts to the grave. I want to offer special prayers for those who gave their lives at Fort Hood in the defense of some nincompoop's idea of political correctness against a treasonous enemy in our midst. I hope they leave the ba$tard alone in the shower at Leavenworth.

I also want to offer my thanks to those of my forefathers who served:

-Jon Miller, B Co, 51st NY Regiment, Civil War, Great Great Uncle
-Ezra Miller, Ibid
-Alfred Miller, Hvy Arty, NY, Civil War, Great Great Grandfather
-Alfred Smith, US Navy, World War I, Grandfather
-Robert Smith, US Army, World War II, Father
-Stephen Malasky, US Army, World War II, D-Day, Great Uncle

Best to all

Jeff Smith
SSG, US Army and Army Reserve
1979-2003
Operation Desert Storm 513th MI Bde
World Trade Center 9/11/01 Greater NYC Security Detail

I can only say that my service was nothing compared to the service and sacrifice of my ancestors.

My one brother and I both got our middle names from a World War II veteran uncle, a man who never quite "fit the mold". Ater his discharge, he retuned to the small community in which he grew up, held a variety of jobs, lived out his days, and is buried in the section of a local cemetery reserved for veterans.

Although his actions never got him into trouble with authority, he fit the stereotype of the veteran who never quite succeeded in returning to the stability (and tedium) of civillian life. But one day in 1944, PFC Eugene Downey, U S Army, won a Purple Heart at St. Lo, Normandy.

And that is more than sufficient.
