GVT Acquires x-LV/LIRR Modernized Heavyweight Club Car

Postby jhdeasy » Fri Jan 16, 2009 11:39 am

I'm told that Genessee Valley Transportation Company has purchased a modernized heavyweight club car, built by Pullman in 1911, that served Lehigh Valley passengers (1911-1961) and then Long Island Rail Road passengers (1961-1974) until it was retired, acquired by a private owner and moved to Marietta, Georgia, as part of a restuarant complex.

While on Lehigh Valley, the car was LV 1000. During its time on LIRR, it was 2037 TUSACARORA CLUB, renamed ONTEORA in 1972, and was a member of the parlor car fleet.

Here are some photos of the car taken between 1962 and 2003: http://www.dominionrailvoyages.com/jhd/lirr/heavyweight_tuscarora_club.html

Congratulations to GVT on their new acquisition! After they determine how to move the car from Georgia to one of their properties in the northeast, it will be interesting to see how they refurbish the car and how they will use it.

BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: Former LV/LIRR heavyweight club car is beyond economic repair and will be scrapped onsite in Marietta, GA.

MARIETTA - The owner of the 1917 Pullman railcar on Marietta Square has hired a firm to demolish the car, city officials said.
Brian Binzer, the city's development services director, said the owner is waiting on approval from CSX before moving forward with the demolition because the railcar is on CSX right of way. Once approval is granted, demolition by Winter Environmental of Atlanta should take about two weeks, Binzer said. The demolition plan is to cut the railcar up with power saws or a torch and deposit the pieces into dumpsters, according to documents submitted to the city by Tim Egan, vice president of Winter Environmental. The city cited railcar owner Michael Thomas of Genesee Valley Transportation based in Batavia, N.Y., with a code violation May 29 for failing to repair or remove the railcar as ordered. But unlike the railcar's previous owner, no fines have been handed down yet from Marietta Municipal Court, Binzer said. "Because the owner has been taking appropriate actions to resolve the situation, the court has been working with the owner to bring the property into compliance. The owner has been cooperative and presently continues to comply with what is needed, including just recently making the application to CSX. Code enforcement and the courts will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the owner takes the necessary actions to stay on course, Binzer said.
